Silent Rumble
As seen in issue 497 of Back street heroes
Well, they say time flies like an arrow (and fruit flies like bananas. But when Max
invited me along to this year’s Silent Rumble, I was amazed when he said it was the
10th, as it seemed only yesterday, he launched, and I attended the first show in
aid of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. A charity which provides dogs, not only to assist
in alerting for important sounds such as timers but also as emotional support for
their owners, who can otherwise feel isolated.
Max has never let his deafness hold him back, and at one time had one of loudest
chops I knew (sounded ok to him) and it for this that he decided a bike show to raise
funds for a charity close to his heart. He is an active member of the West Harley
Riders Club, who came out in force to support. But this is very much his show, and
he should be rightly proud of what he has achieved. The event is free to enter with
buckets for donations and a raffle to the Hearing dog charity I have no idea how
much was raised but do hope they did well.
Arriving early, I found the traders struggling against the wind setting up stalls,
while Max ran around with cones, tape and all sorts sorting stuff out. Even before
official opening time there were folk arriving a real promise of a good day. The
venue had even purchased a new BBQ for the day, and I soon answered the question
“how many people does it take to set up a BBQ” a lot seems to be the answer with
many more to watch. But they were soon doing a roaring trade.
And steadily the bike park filled up, and it was good to see a right mix of bikes,
the same with the show bikes. I thought the seriously modified Honda Grom with extended
swing arm and air suspension was cool. It was good to see a younger generation there
too.
After the first set by the band, there was a tidily organised raffle, and prizegiving.
I recall at previous shows the show winners won framed certificates, which caused
all sorts of fun, this year neat cups, though still a challenge for those with no
luggage. Especially as some trophy winners seemed to be doing well on the raffle.
And what was surprising at many shows as soon as prizes over many bikes leave , but
here it seemed most were settled in for a pleasant afternoon socialising.
Amongst the trophy winners were
Best Chop the white Harley
Best Brit The Triumph Trident with neat touches like the wheels, starter and fuel
filler
Best Harley Warhorse
Best classic CX500c (used to be a dream bike for me prior to owning several unreliable
triumphs T140s)
Best in show, Blue Sportster Chop
Best Rat Heavily modified Yamaha
Best Trike Black Suzuki
